All meetings take place at 8.30 p.m. in the Blue Room of the Catholic Chaplaincy. Members who wish to dine with the speaker, please inform the President by Pigeon post or e-mail at least four days in advance.

A chance for new and old members to meet the committee and each other. Existing members wishing to attend are asked to contribute £2 towards costs.

Thursday, October 12th
The Centrality of the Sacraments
Rev. Fr John Edwards SJ

Fr Edwards will begin the term’s speaker meetings with a talk on the Sacraments, the signs of grave of the Church.

Second Week

Contemplation: A Normal State for Christians?
Br Daniel Seward, Cong. Orat.

Br Daniel, a former President, and now a deacon at the Oxford Oratory, will speak on this aspect of spirituality.

Third Week

Benediction, Termly Meeting, and Drinks

 

Prayers in the Chapel of Saint Thomas More, followed by the tremly meeting and drinks in the narthex.

Friday, October 27th
Millenium Conference
Rev. Fr Avery Dullees SJ

To conclude the Chaplaincy’s series of four conferences for the Millenium, Fr Dulles and other speakers will speak on the Trinity.

The Persecuted Church in China

Miss Bromle-Martin spent some time working in the underground Church in China, and will recount some of her experiences and thoughts to the society.

Fr Hoey, a priest in Westminster diocese will expound the need for prayer in reading the Scriptures.

Fr Fitzgerald, A White Father, has spent a lot of time in Zambia, and will speak on the effects that reforms there have had in the Church

The Venerable John Henry Newman – A prophet of our time
Rev Dr Philip Smyth

Fr Smyth is a graduate of Bristol University where he read Theology and Religious Studies. He trained for the priesthood in Rome where he obtained his Licence in Sacred Theology with a Tessina on “The Blessed Virgin Mary in the writings of John Henry Newman.” Last year he was awarded his doctoral degree Summa Cum Laude when he defended his thesis entitled “Divine Providence in the Life and Theology of John Henry Newman” in Rome.

Surviving the Church in the 21st century: A guide for generations X, Y and Z Dom Alban Nunn O.S.B.

 

Fr Alban is a monk of St Benedict’s Abbey, Ealing. Formerly a student at St Benet’s Hall, he is a renowned musician and has given talks on a variety of sunjects around the globe

Liturgical Renewal for the New Millenium
Very Rev Cuthbert Brogan

Fr Cuthbert is the Prior of St Michael’s Abbey, Farnborough. The Abbey itself played a part in the liturgical movement at the beginning of the last century under the leadership of Abbot Cabrol. Fr Cuthbert now works tirelessly to continue keeping the abbey as a place of great monastic liturgy.

Rev Fr Bernard Green O.S.B.

Fr Bernard is a monk of St Lawrence’s Abbey, Ampleforth and is currently studying at St Benet’s Hall. His doctoral studies centre on the life and work of Pope Leo the Great.

Scandal in the cloister? The visitation records of the English White Canons
Dr Joseph Gribbin

Dr Gribbin obtained his doctorate from Christ’s College, Cambridge. He worked extensively on the visitation reports of Abbot Redman which are the most extensive collection of vistation reports from medieval England. They present a fascinating picture of the lifestyle enjoyed by an Order that was once widespread throughout England.

“Karl Rahner: Theologian of Hope and Dialogue?” – Fr Philip Endean SJ

Fr Endean is a member of Campion Hall and editor of The Way. He has also edited a work entitled The Spiritual Writings of Karl Rahner.

WEEK THREE – 3rd February, 8.30pm

“The Role of the Laity in the 21st Century” – Fr Gerard Sheehan

Fr Sheehan is a priest of the prelature of Opus Dei and has recently been appointed as parish priest of St Thomas More, Swiss Cottage.

WEEK FOUR – 10th February, 8.30pm

“Emergent Recusancy” – Fr Michael O’Boy

Fr O’Boy has a doctorate in ecclesiastical history from Cambridge and is a priest in the Archdiocese of Westminster. He is at present Sub-Administrator of Westminster Cathedral.

WEEK FIVE – 17th February, 8.30pm

“The Church and Politics – how far should it go?” – Charles Wookey

Mr Charles Wookey is a graduate of Merton and an Assistant General Secretary of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales.

WEEK SIX – 26th February in the afternoon

Visit to Mapledurham House and Holy Mass in the house chapel, by kind permission of Mr Jack Easton.

WEEK SEVEN – 3rd March, 8.30pm

“John Paul II and Heroic Womanhood” – Fr David Merconi SJ

Fr Merconi is a Jesuit who has written extensively on this subject. He lives at Campion Hall.

WEEK EIGHT – 10th March, 7.30pm
