An award-winning journalist living in Oxford, Leonie has written for a wide variety of journals on women’s issues and religion. She is involved in editorial work for the international Catholic review Communio and for the Maryvale Institute magazine The Sower, and is Assistant Diretor of the Oxford Centre of Faith and Culture.

Tour of the Treasures of Campion Hall and Devotions
Meet at Campion’s Entrance Hall at 8pm

We are very grateful to the Master of Campion Hall for allowing us a private view of the artistic treasures of the Hall, including many religious paintings and liturgical vestments collected by Fr Martin d’Arcy SJ in the 1920s and 1930s. The Tour will be led by Fr Gabriel Flynn. Afterwards we will pray the Jesus Psalter in the Chapel in honour of the Forty Martyrs.

Professor John Haldane

Professor Haldane is Director fo the Centre for Philosophy and Public Affairs and Head of the School of Philosophy and Anthropology at the University of St Andrews. He contributes in various art journals and the ‘Credo’ column of The Times regularly. Professor Haldane will discuss issues of meaning and spirituality as illustrated by the works of some contemporary artists. This talk will be slide-illustrated.

Dazzling Darkness: The Mystical Theology of St Gregory of Nyssa
The Rt Revd Bishop Kallistos Ware

Bishop Kallistos should be familiar to many in Oxford: being the Greek Orthodox Bishop of Diokleia, he also teaches Eastern Christian Studies as the Spalding Lecturer. St Gregory (d. c.385) was one of the Cappadocian Fathers and the brother of St Basil. A great exegete and a fighter against the heresies of his time like Arianism, he also wrote extensively on the mystical life.

Guest-of-Honour: His Grace the Archbishop of Melbourne, the Most Rev George Pell

Archbishop Pell was a student in Oxford University in the early 1970s. He is now a member of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith in the Roman Curia. The Solemn Votive Mass to Our Lady of Ransom will mark the end of the Anniversary year. Invitations to the meal will be sent near the time; please contact the President for further details.

Thirty Years after Humanae Vitae: Combatting the Contraceptive Culture
Luke Gormally

Mr Gormally is the Director of the Linacre Centre of Health Care Ethics in London, which seeks to defend and promote Catholic positions in medical ethics. He has also edited and published works on such topics as the elderly and euthanasia. This year marks the thirtieth anniversay of Paul VI’s controversial encyclical Humanae Vitae, and Mr Gormally shall speak on developments since 1968 and the difficulties we still face on this very sensitive issue.

Professor the Lord Alton of Liverpool

David Alton was already a well-known Catholic in politics as a Liberal Democrat MP in the Commons. Now a Life Peer and the Director of the Foundation for Citizenship at Liverpool, he continues to promote Catholic values in public life. He will address the Prolife Society and us on his experiences of futhering Life convictions as a public personality.

Dr Sheridan Gilley

Dr Gilley is Reader in Theology in the University of Edinburgh. He has written numerous articles and edited books on Victorian religion and especially on our Patron, the Venerable Cardinal Newman. The call of conscience was one of the chief factors leading to his conversion to Catholicism.
After the talk, a very brief Termly General Meeting will follow.

Gerry Matatics is a celebrated Scripture scholar and friend of Scott Hahn. He teaches at the seminary of Our Lady of Guadaloupe, Scranton, Pennsylvania.

The first in a series of talks on our Blessed Lady. Fr. Chavasse is the Provost of the Birmingham Oratory and thus the successor of the Venerable John Henry Newman. He will address the society on the Vigil of the Feast of the Purification of Mary, the anniversary of the Oratory’s foundation.

Fr. Finnegan is the Chaplain of the University of Surrey. He will examine the recent doctrinal developments in the Church’s thinking on the priesthood.

Fr. Bertram is one of the founding fathers of the Oxford Oratory, and a distinguished scholar and writer. He is presently translating the Collations of St. John Cassian and will use these as a basis for his talk.

Mr. Timothy Tindal-Robinson

Timothy Tindal-Robinson is the Vice-President of the Fatima World Apostolate. He has been a Catholic publisher and author for most of his life and has been writing about the Fatima apparitions and message since 1980.

The Life of Fr. Ignatius Spencer
Fr. Hubert Condron, C.P.

Fr. Ignatius Spencer lived from 1799 to 1864 and was a companion of Bl. Dominic Barberi of the Mother of God. Fr. Condron is the postulator of his cause for beatification.

Miss Felicity O’Brien

Felicity O’Brien is the private secretary of the Archbishop of Southwark and one of the foremost experts on the pontificate of this great and saintly Pope. Genuine video footage of the Pontiff will be used during this talk, which will be held in the Ronald Knox Library of the Catholic Chaplaincy.

The Same Sacrifice? – The Mass and Calvary
Fr. Aidan Nichols, O.P.

Fr. Nichols is the Prior of Blackfriars, Cambridge, and a renowned Catholic theologian. Amongst his other recent publications are The Splendour of Truth (on the Catechism), and An Introduction to Ratzinger. He will examine the theological debates on the exact relationship between the Sacrifice of the Mass and that of the Cross.

Mgr. Morrish is the Regional Vicar of Opus Dei, a personal prelature of the Catholic Church dedicated to the sanctification of ordinary secular life. He will address the subject of divine filiation – the divine sonship of the baptized.

Living Tradition within the Church
Mgr. Prof. Dr. Rudolf Michael Schmitz

The author of several books on Ecclesiology, Mgr. Schmitz was ordained by Cardinal Ratzinger for the diocese of Cologne. A member of the Institute of Christ the King, he is a chaplain to His Holiness, a member of the Pontifical Academy of Theology, academic advisor of the International Centre for Liturgical Studies (CIEL) and is attached to the nunciature in Kyrgyzstan.

Mr. Carwood is the founder and director of The Cardinall’s Musick, which has released numerous highly praised recordings of pre- and post-Reformation English polyphony, the subject of his talk. He is Director of Music at the London Oratory.

Fr. Pereiro was for many years the secretary of Blessed Josemaría Escriva. He is chaplain of Grandpont House and has recently published an acclaimed intellectual biography of this great Cardinal of the Second Spring.

Mass of Thursday within the Octave of Pentecost will be sung in Merton College Chapel by the Very Revd. Fr. Josef Bisig, F.S.S.P., founder and Superior General of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter. The sermon will be preached by Fr. Peter Newby, the University Chaplain. The Mass will be followed by the Termly Dinner at Oriel College.

Fr. McManus is a member of the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity. He was ordained in the United States and worked in Mexico, Belize and Guatemala. He now works in Aylesbury.
